available online for fine art, antiques & collectibles!
Almost everything I see in this category at
appraisal day events was once someone's wedding
gift. Normally it is Limoge, Nippon or a
German porcelain manufacture.
If you porcelain has a country
of origin mark such as Austria, France, England
or Germany then it was made after 1891. This is
when the Congress of the United States passed
the “McKinley Tarrif Act” which stipulated all
items imported into the US has the country that
it came from marked on it.

As with all general rules there
are exceptions. For instance items marked Nippon (which
is also the official name for Japan) was used used up
until 1921. After 1921 the US Congress requested that
only Japan be used on their exports.
